Coming in to the procedure Dr. Agatstein made sure I was doing alright and explained everything so I would know every single thing he was doing. During the procedure he put on any music I asked for! He also made sure I was doing ok and during the procedure I felt no pain at all, also afterwards the recovery was very straightforward with thorough instructions from Dr. Agatstein and almost no pain whatsoever. WHEN ORAL SURGERY NEEDS MORE THAN ROUTINE CARE

Routine Dentist or Oral Surgeon? Know the Difference.

For routine dental care, a general dentist may be the right place to begin. But when treatment involves extractions, impacted teeth, implants, bone grafting, or sedation, focused surgical training matters.

When care is more complex or surgical, choosing the right provider from the start can make the entire experience feel more confident, more precise, and more reassuring.

Greater confidence with surgical planning

Complex procedures benefit from training focused specifically on surgical diagnosis and execution.

More comfort with sedation options

Patients often feel more at ease when sedation is offered and carefully integrated into treatment planning.

Treatment better suited to complex cases

Impacted teeth, implants, grafting, and advanced procedures often require a higher level of surgical judgment.

More peace of mind

When treatment is not routine, care from a dentist with focused surgical training can give patients greater clarity and reassurance.

Patient Questions

FAQs

Clear information is an important part of a calmer, more confident treatment experience. Here are answers to some of the most common questions patients ask before oral surgery, wisdom teeth removal, and dental implant treatment.

Q. Will I be asleep for my procedure?

That depends on the type of procedure and the treatment plan. Many patients are able to have oral surgery very comfortably with local anesthesia, while others may benefit from sedation to help them feel deeply relaxed during treatment. The best option depends on the procedure, medical history, and comfort level.

Q. What is recovery like after wisdom teeth removal?

Recovery is usually the most noticeable during the first few days. It is normal to have some swelling, soreness, mild bleeding, and difficulty chewing at first. Most patients gradually improve over the following days and continue healing over the next couple of weeks. Following the post-operative instructions carefully can make recovery smoother and more comfortable.

Q. Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?

No. Wisdom teeth do not always need to be removed. If they come in normally, are healthy, and can be cleaned properly, they may simply be monitored. Removal is more often recommended when they are impacted, causing pain, damaging nearby teeth, contributing to infection, or creating problems that are likely to worsen over time.

Q. When is a tooth extraction necessary?

A tooth may need to be removed when it is too damaged to repair, severely decayed, badly infected, loose from advanced gum disease, or causing problems for neighboring teeth. In some cases, extraction is also recommended to prepare for orthodontic treatment or to prevent future complications.

Q. Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Many people are good candidates for dental implants. Candidacy depends on factors such as overall health, gum health, jawbone support, and healing ability. Even if there has been bone loss, additional procedures may sometimes be used to help create the support needed for implant treatment.

Q. How long does the dental implant process take?

The timeline varies from one patient to another. Some cases move more quickly, while others require healing time between steps. The total length depends on whether the tooth is already missing, whether an extraction is needed, and whether procedures such as bone grafting or sinus augmentation are necessary before the implant can be restored.

Q. What are dental implants?

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots that are placed in the jawbone to support artificial teeth. They are designed to provide a stable, long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. Implants can be used to replace one tooth, several teeth, or support a full set of teeth in certain cases.
