What is IV sedation?

IV sedation, as the name suggests, an IV will be placed into your arm. The medication will be administered to keep you comfortable and sleepy. This is why it’s also called “twilight sleep” or “conscious sedation”. Although general anesthetics put you completely under, IV sedatives induce what is known as “twilight sleep” or conscious sedation”. This state means that you’re not completely unconscious, but you are much less aware of your surroundings and deeply relaxed. As a result, you will have little or no memory of the appointment afterward.

Who can do IV sedation?

If you have difficulty staying still in the chair, or if you have anxiety about the procedure, IV Sedation can be a great option for you. In some cases, we will recommend you have IV Sedation for your comfort during a long or complicated treatment. IV sedation is not necessary or suitable for everyone’s treatment. Please call our office to find out if you are a candidate.

Before IV Sedation

Before a procedure with IV sedation, you should tell Dr. Agatstein and his team about any allergies or medical conditions you have. You should also inform us of medications you are taking and any prior surgeries you’ve had and the type of anesthesia used. You need to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from the clinic for the procedure. Follow any instructions provided to you prior to your procedure, including restrictions on food 8 hours prior and 2 hours prior on clear liquid drinks. Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking marajuana the day before or the day of your procedure as it can affect how anesthesia performs.

After IV Sedation

Typically, you will feel groggy after your procedure and may have a slight headache and nausea. During the recovery process, our team will monitor your vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen levels. You usually will be observed for one to two hours after the procedure before you are able to return home with your driver. your next treatment. To book IV sedation you will need to coordinate in advance with our staff since Sedations are not done every day, and only done on specific dates and time. Please call our office for more details.
